Sketchbook Swoops

I really want to post drawings from my upcoming installation, but I don't want to spoil it before it's up! So for now here's one from the sketchbook. This was drawn after a delicious Thai dinner before seeing The Sandwitches, Calvin Johnson, and Sonny and the Sunsets at Cherry Sprout Produce. Now THAT'S a summer day.

Blind Alibi

While in Arcata Stephanie and I passed the time by doing some blind contours of each other at a local establishment. I cheated a bit on the top and bottom ones though. I swear her eyes were actually levitating in front of her face.

Stephanie Surprised

An unlikely visit.

One morning a pickup truck clacked and crashed its way into the alley behind our house, making a great ruckus. It stopped for a moment and then went on its way. Curious and puzzled, Stephanie and I went to investigate the scene but were stopped in our tracks when we heard a great roar! Frightened as we were, our curiosity got the best of us and we pushed on. Lo and Behold, when we unlatched our back gate what did we see? A baby triceratops staring right back at us! Realizing she was a friendly triceratops, we quickly brought her in for a bowl of oats and a side of pterodactyl bacon. She thanked us but explained that she had to be on her way, as she was searching for the rest of her kind. Her visit was brief, but I managed to make this sketch as a memento of our morning together. Stephanie and her still write to each other every now and then and we're hoping to pay her and her family a visit soon.

Lounging by the Coy Pond

I really wanted to draw all weekend, but I was a little preoccupied with setting up my first website! Stay tuned for that people, I'll let you know when it's ready to be unveiled. Here's a drawing I did of Skuffz from our San Diego trip. Hanging out at Balboa Park and eating mango in the shade. What did we do after this? We got soft serve. Yeah. That's right.

I haven't gone to figure drawing lately but I keep meaning to. I found out recently that the Wednesday sessions at PNCA are going to continue through July so at least I'll have plenty of opportunities.

Crossword Scuffz

I don't know about the rest of the world, but here in Portland Sunday was positively the best day for weather all year. Went on a fantastic bike ride to Laurelhurst park, then a hunt for food which brought us to Tiny's where I did this drawing. Isn't it great how they provide crossword puzzles for everyone?

Scribble Shade + Watercolor

This was the drawing I referred to on Friday being part one of a three part series (part two being the self portrait). I decided to try and salvage it and I'm relatively happy with the way it came out. Been a while since I've worked with watercolor, but I really like it as a medium and I'm especially excited about all the ways in which one can use it with pen and ink. Portraits are so tricky, you mess one thing up and the whole thing looks off. I guess this is why I prefer drawing animals. They're just happy to be drawn at all.
