Capybara Birthday

I love when birthdays roll around because it gives me a chance to make a nonsensical card, usually involving an animal. Tomorrow is my brother's birthday and last night we went out to celebrate with some raucous and rambunctious karaoke, where I presented him with this:

One of my favorite animals, the capybara (world's largest rodent), wearing a fez. Nothing says 31 like a capybara donning a fez, am I right people?

Last One.

This woman was going crazy at Karaoke with the dancing. At one point it even looked like she was doing the Pee Wee Herman dance. Oh, and she was wearing a Harley Davidson shirt. These people make Karaoke worth it.

More than a feeling

This was a blind contour that I embellished a little.

I haven't gone to figure drawing lately but I keep meaning to. I found out recently that the Wednesday sessions at PNCA are going to continue through July so at least I'll have plenty of opportunities.

Btw my promotion is still on, people. Spread the word.

How can be?

If you're going to Karaoke on a Saturday night it's always a good idea to bring some sketching paper with you to amuse yourself while waiting for your turn to sing. Thanks Ben for the sheet of paper!

I'd also like to introduce a brand spanking new "Sketch a Day" internet promotion. If you sign up to follow this blog I will personally draw a portrait of you and send you a scan of the drawing. If you decide you want to enjoy it in your home you can then purchase it for a measly $15. All you have to do is click the button in the right-hand column that says "follow" and send the picture of yourself that you want drawn to dailysketch17.blogspot.com. And yes, this offer will apply to all of my current followers too, so feel free to send those pics in!

Thrown voices.

This is real. This happened. It was a Thursday night like any other. A few friends and I gathered at our local "How Can Be?" Karaoke lounge for a relaxing night of drinks, laughs, and off key renditions of classic songs. The clock struck midnight and we all knew what time it was. A hush went over the crowd as we waited for the KJ to step up to the mic for his designated time slot. Distracted by our private musings we almost didn't notice the tiny wooden puppet clinging to the KJ's right arm. Almost....

Before we had time to realize the gravity of what was actually happening, we were struck agog by a duet sung by a man - and a ventriloquist dummy. They cooed back and forth with promises of love and mended hearts while we the audience sat speechless. It was unnatural, yet unmistakably amusing like watching a bear ride a unicycle, or a hippy try to dress acceptably for a wedding. And as quickly as it had all started, it was over. And all that's left is this crudely drawn sketch. "Don't go breaking my heart"? Why, you already have senor KJ. You already have.

Karaoke Party

Well I'm back from my week-long break. It's been pretty hectic around here and I've been having trouble keeping up, but that should all end after the new year. One thing that I did manage to do in the last week was go to karaoke three times (somehow). I tried out some new ones, and polished some old ones, but mainly I got a chance to draw a few of the regulars as they crooned their magic croon. Here are a few singers from The Rickshaw, a little Chinese food/Karaoke bar up in Seattle. Did I mention I went to Seattle?
